Entangled states of trapped ions for quantum simulations and quantum logic spectroscopy

Abstract
Strings of laser-cooled trapped ions can be precisely controlled and manipulated with coherent narrow-band laser light. The use of entangling laser-ion interactions opens up the prospect of simulating the physics of interacting spins. I will present experiments that we have carried out with small ion crystals. In a second experiment with a two-species ion crystal, we have demonstrated a novel type of quantum logic spectroscopy. Using one ion that is easy to manipulate and to measure, we detect whether a second ion has scattered a single photon by preparing the two ion crystal in a non-classical state of motion
