Abstract
Several Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) packages exist for modelling and simulating systems using the discrete event, continuous or agent-based paradigms. In this presentation, through a number of examples from personal experience, I will contrast one of the most widely used packages ARENA ® and one of the most recently developed packages SIMIO ®.
My aim is to share my own work and experience in systems modelling and simulation using these two packages and most importantly to engage with other researchers in the university who may have similar experience or interest in the use of these and (or) other systems modelling and simulation tools.
The examples to be discussed would include the modelling and simulation of an Accident and Emergency department, an operating theatre system, geographically distributed hospital ward system and a paediatric neuropsychological service system.
