Abstract
Light-matter interaction beyond the perturbative regime leads to the concept of strong coupling and of polaritons, quantum quasiparticles whose eigenstates are coherent superposition of photon and electron wavefunctions. After the key observations with atomic systems coupled to microwave resonators by S. Haroche and coworkers, polaritons have been observed in semiconductor systems, both employing excitonic and intersubband resonances of heterostructured materials. In this seminar I will review the most relevant physical and applicative issues dealing with intersubband polaritons in the mid- and far-infrared spectral ranges, with special attention to the potentiality of devices where the electromagnetic resonance is provided by a photonic crystal structure.
