The LHC Project: the Higgs Boson and beyond
- π€ Speaker: Prof. Andy Parker, Department of Physics
- π Date & Time: Friday 16 November 2012, 18:00 - 19:00
- π Venue: McCrum Lecture Theatre, Ben'et Street, Next to the Eagle Pub
Abstract
The talk will discuss the physics and experiments behind the recent discovery of a “Higgs-like boson” at the Large Hadron Collider, reviewing the standard model of particle physics and the motivation behind the Higgs hypothesis. The most recent data will be shown, and the open questions which remain will be discussed. The standard model is still incomplete, for example not covering gravity. Some work in Cambridge to search for evidence of new physics processes such as the production of quantum-sized black holes will also be covered.
