The RAPID -MOC program has been monitoring the overturning circulation in the Atlantic since April 2004. From 7 years of data, we have found startling variability on all timescales, from months to interannual. I will briefly describe the observations, and then talk about two recent findings from the RAPID project—the role of eddies in setting the strength of the Gulf Stream in the Florida Straits, and the impact of dramatic recent interannual variability in the MOC on the heat budget of the North Atlantic.
