- ๐ค Speaker: Prof Howard Griffiths, Department of Plant Sciences
- ๐ Date & Time: Friday 23 November 2012, 18:00 - 19:00
- ๐ Venue: McCrum Lecture Theatre, Ben'et Street, Next to the Eagle Pub
Abstract
Prof. Howard Griffiths will discuss the food security debate: the worldโs population is expected to increase to 9 billion over the upcoming 50 years; can we rely on traditional plant breeding to deliver in the face of intensifying climatic extremes? Does the solution lie in engineering plants to enhance photosynthetic rates, crop production and therefore yield? what are the technical and social challenges of such a scheme? The presentation will focus on the โhowsโ, whereas the following discussion will focus on the โwhysโ, and consider the pitfalls and pratfalls which thus far have bedeviled the food security debate.
