Abstract
What makes people kind? What makes people happy? These timeless questions have inspired furious debate across disciplines, but clear answers remain elusive. In this talk, Dr Alex Kogan will present emerging evidence in the psychological study of kindness and well-being, offering insights from a perspective that aims to integrate biological, psychological, and cultural factors in understanding (a) the antecedents and (b) the consequences of kindness and well-being. In particular, Dr Kogan will present findings focused on the role of the oxytocin and vagal systems, the effects of prosocial motivation, and the role of cultural factors tied to uncertainty avoidance, using data collected in the laboratory, daily life, and mass surveys.
