Dr Mwaka- a qualified medical doctor and lecturer at the School of Medicine, is currently pursuing a PhD degree at Makerere University as a THRiVE Fellow (http://www.thrive.cam.ac.uk). He is mentored by Professor Martin Roland CBE of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care in Cambridge. In Dr Mwaka’s presentation, he will explore the influence of cultural knowledge/beliefs on factors that increase/decrease cervical cancer risk, incidence and early detection, the interpretation of symptoms and signs of cancer of the cervix within the cultural context, and the influence that such interpretation has for preventive measures and health-seeking in Uganda.
