Abstract
Suppose S in [N]^d is a big set of integer points which is very badly distributed in residue classes for many primes. A remarkable conjecture of Helfgott and Venkatesh asserts that the only way in which this can happen is if the set S is strongly algebraic, in a precise sense. In this talk we will be concerned with this question and how to obtain a positive answer whenever the dimension d is greater than one.
