Abstract
Crossrail Limited and Cambridge University are undertaking a collaborative research programme, supported by the Knowledge Transfer Partnership, to improve the understanding of ground movement mechanisms around deep excavations and the stresses induced in shaft linings. The collaborative research provides a review of existing geotechnical instrumentation and explores the application of innovative sensing technology, such optical fibre and wireless mesh sensors, at several Crossrail sites: Limmo Peninsula shaft, Stepney Green step-plate junction, Pudding Mill Lane portal, Paddington Station main box and Liverpool Street sprayed-concrete lined cross-passage.
