The assessment of global aerosol-cloud interactions – why is it so hard?

Abstract
Atmospheric aerosols play an important role in the global climate system through modifications of the global and regional radiation budgets. In particular the uncertainties associated with aerosol-cloud interactions and the resulting radiative effects remains persistently large – why?
In this talk, I will highlight the difficulties to assess aerosol-cloud interactions from space-born remote sensing and discuss the state of the art of the representation of aerosol-cloud interactions in global chemistry aerosol climate models, such as HadGEM-UKCA, from the (slightly) better constrained stratiform clouds to new frontiers: the investigation of aerosol effects on convective clouds.
