Abstract
The Chern number is a mathematical object that can theoretically determine if a fermionic system is topologically ordered or not. For example, it can unambiguously determine if a system can support Majorana fermions that can be employed for topological quantum computation. In this talk we will reformulate the Chern number in terms of a Berry phase or a winding number. Finally, we will present a new decomposition of the Chern number in terms of the spin components of the system’s fermions that can be measured, for example in cold atoms experiments.
