In the first part of the talk, I will present genome-wide analyses of cardiac regulatory regions in Drosophila that have led to a new model of enhancer organisation and revealed some unexpected implications of developmental history. I will then address the properties of regulatory sequence variation in Drosophila and humans, with a particular emphasis on how its potentially deleterious effects may be buffered to ensure coherent transcriptional outputs. Finally, I will show how these research themes will be developed in my new research group at Babraham Institute that will focus on mammalian gene regulation and ageing.
