Abstract
In Sebastiano Serlio’s second of seven books on Architecture, “On Perspective” published in 1545, he described three types of theatrical scenes: the tragic, the comic and the satiric. Of these, the first two were urban, comprising public spaces framed by buildings, and highly influential in Renaissance theatre set design. The treatise also describes the characters and deeds that would be expected in each city type and as such remains a compelling theory on the nature of urban reality. The lecture will discuss the continuing relevance of Serlio’s tragic and comic scenes to urban design, as illustrated by contemporary projects including several by David Kohn Architects.
