Abstract
The basis of guidelines for daylight in buildings in most developed countries is the half-century-old daylight factor. This measure considers relative illumination under a single overcast sky. Thus it is insensitive to prevailing climate and orientation of the building. Daylighting of buildings has undergone a renaissance with the emergence of climate-based modelling techniques and the discovery of the importance of the wider health and well-being benefits of daylight. This presentation will: describe these developments; critique the current recommendations; and, suggest a way forward.
