Towards an Intelligent Textbook for Discrete Mathematics

Abstract
This is a dry run of a talk I will be giving at the International Conference on Active Media Technology in Takamatsu, Japan in May. I will also highlight some of the areas I intend to continue working on during the rest of my PhD research. Many of the people in the group will already have heard some of this material. Feedback on both the talk and the continued research will be appreciated.
I am looking at techniques for building intelligent textbooks. These are web-based textbooks that help the student work through example problems, adapt their content to the student and based on past performance, and allow the student to work in diagram notations that are appropriate to the material. Particularly, I’m looking at how we can build an intelligent textbook for discrete maths. How can students work with maths on the web? How can we correct their maths and explain why it’s wrong? How can we as teachers ask the questions we want to ask, and how can we help the student answer them?
