The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was initially perceived as an aggressive and expansive act by Western observers; however, in the 1990s newly declassified documents showed that Soviet motives were much more erratic and defensive than previously assumed. Similarly, the US-narrative has been revised; in the late 90s, first evidence surfaced that the Carter administration had deliberately provoked the invasion by supporting the Mujahideen six months before the invasion. This talk will consider these different narratives and attempt to shed light on some unresolved questions and contradictions that still surround the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan.
