Cognitive science is the current frontier issue between science and religion. So-called “New Atheists” rely heavily on findings from the Cognitive Science of Religion (CSR) in their campaign to disabuse the world of religion. How compelling are these arguments from Cognitive Science? And if they are not so convincing, are there still important things to learn about religion from cognitive science? This talk will briefly review the major claims about religious belief proffered by cognitive scientists and then evaluate, in terms of both science and philosophy, this research and the arguments based on it that some use to attempt to undermine religious belief.
