Higher derivative with constraints: exorcising Ostrogradski's ghost.

Abstract
Higher derivative theory, if non-degenerate, is known to be accompanied with Ostrogradski’s instability. The only way anyone has ever found to avoid it is by constraints. The first part of my talk will be a pedagogical review of Ostrogradski’s instability and Dirac’s analysis of constrained systems. After that I will present how to introduce suitable constraints which selectively remove the unstable degrees of freedom and render Hamiltonian bounded from below. Finally I will discuss how to apply this technique to higher derivative gravity.
