Abstract
Understanding, and particularly the link between understanding and explanations, has long been of interest to philosophers of science. More recently, epistemologists have discovered understanding; focussing particularly on the relationship between understanding and knowledge. The aim of this paper is to argue, against the received wisdom in epistemology, that understanding p is identical to knowing p. More precisely, I try to develop a view on which understanding is a way of knowing. I then draw out some implications for how explanation fits into the picture.
