Abstract
The standard reply, apparently is: from the great composers or, at least, from conscious working out by mortals here on this earth – and a wonderful gift of ‘talent’ and ‘genius’ it is too. This paper takes a contrary and less conventional view (which – warning – may shock some) and looks instead at dreams, near-death experience and telepathy – ‘inspiration’ in its original sense. It builds both on extensive reading about music and on the speaker’s own personal experience – a ‘case study’ in the modern terminology – and, like as a near-lifelong anthropologist in Africa, Fiji and Britain, on (very) participative observation.
