Subdivision Curves and Surfaces with (Semi-)Sharp Creases

Abstract
Subdivision is a powerful modelling technique used in many applications including computer games and animated films. Subdivision schemes are predominantly based on cubic B-splines and produce smooth surfaces everywhere. However, it is known that using an everywhere smooth surface to model sharp features (such as those on mechanical parts) results in poor geometric fits and unwanted undulations.
I will explore and compare existing techniques for modelling (semi-)sharp features on subdivision curves and surfaces and outline a novel approach that generalises to arbitrary degree subdivision and any level of (dis)continuity.
