Petri nets as semi-quantitative modeling method to explore systems behavior of disease-related pathways

Abstract
Petri nets represent a mathematical formalism to model systems with concurrent processes. Since the early 90ies, more and more applications in biological and medical research has been published using Petri nets for modeling biochemical systems. That comprises metabolism, signal transduction and gene regulation at different levels of abstraction and hybrid models that combine these network types.
The talk will introduce Petri nets in an intuitive way using biochemical examples. We will explain and discuss the application to explore mechanisms in processes of the dystrophin-downstream pathway which is related to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
