I will be briefly reviewing our past views on the molecular gas in galaxies, its state and mass, and how we acquired them. Then a new potentially very different emerging view will be detailed. This was ushered by a larger ground-based survey of high-J CO and HCN lines of local merger/starburst galaxies, now augmented by very high-J CO Spectral Line Energy Distributions (SLEDs) from Herschel. I will conclude by unfolding this picture across cosmic epoch, and its utility in the age of ALMA , as well as SKA and its precursors.
