Abstract
It is well known how to communicate efficiently over the band-limited additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The scene changes completely if the additional constraint is imposed that the transmitted waveform may not be negative at any time instant. This scenario is common in short-range fiber-optical and free-space optical links, where the intensity but not phase of the transmitted light can be controlled and detected. We present an analytical framework to analyze such communication scenarios and design previously unknown modulation schemes.
