Fish have long had a reputation for stupidity (aka goldfish 3 sec memory), but work in my lab shows that they are far more intelligent than we give them credit. This talk will provide a brief overview of the research in the Behaviour, Ecology and Evolution of Fishes lab at Macquarie University, much of which is aimed at probing fish cognition. I will present some recent case studies from the lab, including (but not restricted to): brains and comparative cognition in intertidal gobies, interactions between invasive cane toads and rainbowfish, shark social networks and predator recognition by fish embryos.
