Internet services appear to be converging to a model where data and functionality mostly reside in the cloud and ISPs offer ubiquitous access to this vast pool of resources. What is usually convenient may create limitations (e.g., when the Internet isn’t quite as accessible) or bring have undesirable side effects (e.g., content mining or censorship by third parties). We present a platform for opportunistic communication that relies on mobile user devices and low-cost infrastructure owned by users to create and dynamically grow a user network to complement the Internet, initially at rather local scale. The present implementation features Raspberry Pis as autonomous “liberouters”, instruments (not just) Android smart phones for storing and forwarding data, and offers a distributed app store as an autonomous market place.
