“Shear Plasticity in Practice”

Abstract
Conventional, codified, methods of assessing the capacity of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete half-joints can prove excessively conservative when applied to existing structures, which were designed to less onerous standards and have suffered significant in service deterioration.
This seminar will discuss the use of a three pronged approach to the assessment of an existing half-joint using lower and upper bound plastic analyses, supported by non-linear finite element methods. This combined approach, with cross pollination of mechanisms between methods, sought to converge the assessed capacities from the three techniques, producing a result which is reliable without being excessively conservative. The approach is discussed with reference to the A14 Huntingdon Railway Viaduct.
