Pico: no more passwords!

Passwords are by far the most widely used method for user authentication: everyone who uses a computer is familiar with them and with the frustrating usage rules imposed by the pedantic security people. Regular human beings hate passwords and the associated frustration. And it’s widely acknowledged that passwords, as they’re used in practice, aren’t even very secure. So why are we still using them more than ever?
In this presentation we’ll understand why passwords fail, what other ingenious alternatives have been proposed, and why we are still stuck with passwords today. Then we’ll see how the Pico project, currently in development here at the Computer Lab, addresses the problem with a disruptive long-term approach.
