Linear stability predictions vs. real shear flow behavior

Abstract
This talk will demonstrate successes and limitations of linear stability theory in assessing the nonlinear behavior of some real unstable flows, observed by experiments and direct numerical simulations (DNS). Successful examples from my own research will be shown, including an accurate prediction of the experimental wave growth on a liquid sheet, and matching of stability boundaries, frequencies and mode shapes with DNS for wake flows (linear global modes vs. nonlinear Koopman modes). I will also show my own examples of when (and why) the linear and nonlinear behavior of the flow were different.
