Bird migration is a phenomenon that has long fascinated scientists and observers. Nearly 20% of bird species are migratory, and twice a year they cause a significant seasonal redistribution of avian diversity across the world.

Previous work has mostly centred on a few species and/or at narrow spatial scales. For my PhD, I quantified global patterns of migratory bird diversity. With this data in hand, one may then ask the question: why do some parts of the world have more migrants than others? In my talk, I will present my latest results and attempt to bring some answers to this question.
