Abstract
Inverse problems are ubiquitous in geophysics, and constitute one of the main ways we can learn about the Earth. A notable example being the use of seismic tomography to construct models of the Earth’s interior structure. In this talk we describe, in a non-technical manner, the importance of quantifying uncertainty in the solution of such inverse problems, and the difficulties inherent in any attempt to do so.
