The concept of food addiction has gathered a lot of currency in both the scientific literature and the lay media. Food addiction seems potentially relevant in the context of our modern food environment and the obesity epidemic and does have a certain intuitive appeal. Similarities in the clinical picture and the neurobiological findings between certain groups of obese individuals and individuals with substance dependence, backed up by some compelling animal data have taken the food addiction model to its present state. However is this data really convincing? Do we have enough to say that a food addiction syndrome really exists? In this talk, we will discuss these questions and the implications of getting the answers wrong.
