Symmetry breaking in fluid-structure interaction systems

Abstract
Two simple systems are analysed numerically: the flow past a cylinder and that in a channel driven by a sinusoidal pressure gradient. In both configurations an elastic filament is present, symmetrically placed and hinged at the wall (of the cylinder or the channel). In both cases we find that a symmetry breaking bifurcation may arise through the fluid-structure interaction, causing either a net lift (in the case of the cylinder) or a net mean flow (in the pulsating channel). We explore some possible reasons for this behaviour.
