Tools for quantum computing with trapped ions: single-qubit addressing protocol and process tomography of a Molmer-Sorensen entangling gate

Abstract
I will present some recent work done at the Weizmann Institute on the development of basic tools for quantum computing with trapped ions. First, I will present a simple method we developed to spectrally resolve single-spins that are variably coupled to an external oscillating field, using a dressing field [1]. We implemented this scheme experimentally on a linear chain of trapped ions that are separated by 3 microns, dressed by a laser field that is resonant with the micromotion sideband of a narrow optical transition of the strontium atom we are using. Secondly, I will present the realization of a very high fidelity entanglement gate of the Molmer-Sorensen type using a narrow-line laser in master-slave configuration. We performed a full characterization of the MS interaction through quantum process tomography [2].
