Can Jews Make Love? Romance in the Modern Hebrew Novel
- đ¤ Speaker: Dr Yaron Peleg (University of Cambridge)

- đ Venue: Erasmus room, Queens' College
Abstract
The development of modern European literature, especially the novel, is strongly linked to the secularization of Christian ideals of love from the devotion to God to the devotion between men and women. Curiously, however, it did not serve the same role in Jewish culture and particularly in Hebrew literature in the 19th century. This, despite the fact that modern Hebrew literature was as European as its Anglo, Romance, Germanic and Slavic sister literatures, and was shaped by similar forces. The lecture will explore this peculiar difference and try to understand the different role love had in the works of modern Hebrew writers.
