Abstract
Through heat and carbon uptake, the ocean reduces or delays atmospheric warming due to radiative forcing. However the feedback of future changes of dynamical processes on surface temperatures and levels of atmospheric CO2 is not well constrained. I will discuss a set of scalings in order to quantify the role of different dynamical processes in setting the heat and carbon uptake with a focus on the Southern Ocean wind and eddies. The scalings will form the basis for a conceptual model of ocean uptake to interpret the results of complex general circulation models, including quantifying sources and sinks of ocean heat uptake and feedback processes involving air-sea carbon fluxes. I will concentrate on adjustment timescales of ocean and carbon uptake under different climate change scenarios.
