Abstract
Hyperelliptic curves were introduced by Abel in 1826. They were intensively studied over the real and complex numbers by Abel, Legendre, Jacobi, and Riemann. In this lecture I will discuss some recent advances that have been made on arithmetic questions, such as the existence of rational points.
