Abstract
Modelling the ductile response of structures to earthquake loading is far from satisfactory. Even under monotonic compression tests the unloading at advanced strains of simple specimens is not predicted reliably using numerical tools. In this seminar the work at UCL , which addresses this problem through a reconsideration of the failure of concrete, is described. This leads to the suggested replacement of the cumbersome set of different criteria for the various stress states and their possible combinations with a singular, previously proposed, criterion of limiting tension strain.
Hussam Nasreddin is managing the programme for his PhD research studies and John Eyre is his supervisor.
