In many scenarios, lifting relatively dense particles from a sediment bed is far more difficult than might be anticipated from the concentrations of small particles found in the atmosphere and marine environments. While the reasons for this difficulty are fairly well understood, until recently most studies of relatively fine dust particles in the atmospheric context have concentrated on the ballistic collisions of saltating ‘sand’ particles. This talk will explore some elements of fluid structure/particle bed interactions, with particular emphasis on the role of the wake behind other particles and the resuspension due to rain drops.
