Abstract
G_2 manifolds are special 7-dimensional manifolds which play in important role in mathematics, specifically in the study of metrics with special holonomy, and in theoretical physics, particularly since the work of Atiyah and Witten on M-Theory. In the physical context it is important to study G_2 manifolds that are modelled on cones: so-called conifolds. These conifolds, which may be non-compact or singular objects, also play a pivotal role in the mathematical study of G_2 manifolds, going back to the first explicit examples of G_2 manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon. In this talk I will survey what is known about G_2 conifolds, with a particular focus on my joint work with S. Karigiannis on moduli spaces of G_2 conifolds, which leads to a uniqueness result for the Bryant-Salamon G_2 manifolds.
