Two puzzles posed by the Zapiola anticyclone

Abstract
The Zapiola anticyclone is a striking example of a large scale recirculation taking place above a topographic anomaly.ย It is a robust but highly variable vortex observed in the Argentine basin, with strong velocities measured at the bottom of the anticyclone.ย We will ask in the first partย how surface intensified mesoscale eddies may lead to the formation of such bottom-intensified mean flow. We will ask in the second part how the eddy activity surrounding the Zapiola anticyclone may be related to the observed vigorous variability of its mass transport.
