Abstract
In 1971, the community of Las Terrazas was officially inaugurated as part of the development plan for the Sierra del Rosario, Pinar del Río province, Cuba. A comprehensive reforestation and development plan had preceded the construction of the village in a heavily impoverished area. Later, it turned into one of Cuba’s first sustainable tourism development schemes, and continues to be a model community. Oral testimony has recently been published on the subject (Reynaldo González, Conversaciones en Las Terrazas, Havanna 2010) which underpins a local identity interwoven with a national process, though its success arguably outscores that of the Cuban revolution today.
