Abstract
The techniques of surface science are capable of providing deep insight into the fundamental processes of bond breaking and making at the interface between solid and fluid. Although such processes are indisputably key to the mechanisms of heterogeneous catalysis, however, the link is often obscured by “gaps” between the pressures, temperatures and materials used in real catalysts and those amenable to the surface science toolkit. This talk will present a survey of several incisive surface techniques, showcasing the information they can provide and highlighting their inevitable limitations.
