Abstract
Using numerical simulations of rotating Boussinesq convection in a Cartesian box, we study the formation of long-lived, large-scale, depth-invariant vortices. These vortices, which are always cyclonic in the explored parameter range, grow to the largest horizontal size permitted in the computational domain. We will first discuss the domain of existence of these vortices, the possible mechanisms by which they form, and how they affect the flow of heat through the system. In the second part of this talk, we will describe how they interact with self-sustained magnetic field.
