Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now routinely used in most hospitals as a clinical diagnostic tool. However, there are many non-medical applications of MRI that have real life applications. The talk will introduce the principles behind the technique and outline some of the more exotic and/or unusual uses of MRI . Highlights will include snapshots of the use of MRI in the food industry where we have examined Kit-KatTM wafers, food foams, and followed the dynamics of the food marinating process in Chicken Tikka. The talk will also focus on how it is now possible to “image”, non-invasively, industrially relevant chemical reactions under operando (high temperature/high pressure conditions) which is changing the way we think about industrial chemical processes and design.
