The fly visual system is particularly important as an analysable and testable archetype, not only for invertebrate perception, but also for more generalised sensing. The research presented here investigates the limits on the accuracy with which flies can see in order to determine the main causes of image degradation in the early visual system. Insights into invertebrate vision accuracy can potentially revolutionise the architecture and algorithms for artificial perceptual systems in robots and other devices.
