Babel is a routing protocol that cleanly separates a loop-free routing core from multiple metric computation modules and route selection policies. Because of that, Babel has been used in different kinds of networks, as well as in hybrid networks—networks that have different properties at different places.

In this talk, I will describe how the Babel routing core avoids creating transient loops. I will also describe a number of metric computation modules, as well as its route selection policy. I will also describe our recent work on extending the protocol to new situations, notably source-sensitive routing and delay-based routing.
