Phenomenology of dark energy and modified gravity

Abstract
We will discuss the equation of state approach for modelling perturbations in dark energy and modified gravity and various examples including Lorentz violating massive gravity and generalized scalar fields. A by-product of this discussion is a connection between massive gravity and the rigidity of spacetime. Having established equations of state for the perturbations in these models, we derive constraints from present data from the Planck Satellite, BAOs and lensing observations. We conclude by looking at the prospects for future observations made by a CMB satellite and Euclid.
