Abstract
We construct an invariant manifold of the equations of molecular dynamics corresponding to some far-from-equilibrium motions. The manifold is independent of the material: it is exactly the same manifold whether one is solving these equations for air, water or steel. As we explain, the Boltzmann and (properly formulated) Langevin equations inherit versions of this manifold, as well as all of continuum mechanics. There is increasing evidence that there may be some kind of relatively simple “statistical mechanics” on this manifold. Joint work with Kaushik Dayal and Stefan Mueller.
